SORCS First race report

The first of the ten race Southern Off-Road Championship Series (SORCS) was held Sunday, April 2nd. The race was held at Aonia Race park in Washington, Ga. Participating was about 250 bikes and 50 ATV's. The Dodge County gang came away with some great results!

Scott Rogers
captured 1st place in the Open Four Stroke B class. After a mid-pack start, he quickly charged to the front. He battled with another 450R rider, overtaking him for the last time on the motocross section. They traded positions several times during the race. With a dusty, fast track, and temperature in the 80's, the ATV's had a grueling race. There was no time to take it easy. Scott currently leads the points in the Four Stroke B class and is sixth overall. The first two races of the GNCC series really helped Scott get ready for the SORCS series. Cameron Rogers captured 6th place also competing in the Open
Four Stroke B class. Cam got a bad start, almost last with the dusty conditions, but charged through the pack eventually reaching 5th place. This was Cams first race of the year, and although he has been busy with tennis, I think the race took everything he had. He didn't give up, and I think this is the best I have every seen Cam ride. He charged hard for the entire race! There was a scoring discrepancy and eventually they placed Cam in 6th. We saw a couple of problems with the scoring but after questioning it, decided to settle with 6th. We felt Cam did really good competing with the adults in the open class. He currently is 6th in the standing and 18th overall.

Phil Bearden got 1st place in the AM bike race. I think Phil is competing in the Vet C class. He had a lot of competitors in his class and charged all day. Phil was unsure of his ability to charge the entire race due to recently being sick. But apparently the race was good medicine! Taylor Johnson got 2nd place in the 250 A class. Derek Robinson captured 1st place in the Open Four Stroke A class. Sean Callahan placed 2nd in the Utility class.

The weather was perfect for the race and everyone had a great time. It was a good weekend with friends and racing! Caleb Medders joined us for his first cross country race. Caleb helped out in the pits, he really makes a good crew member!

Overall, the race was a success. It is always nice in Aonia unless they have a lot of rain just before an event. There were a few problems. Trying to get everyone in the computer for the first time delayed the AM race for almost an hour. We did see a couple of questionable scoring calls, the Quad race was started rather late, but being it was the first race of the series, I think everyone overlooked those small matters. With over 300 competitors, I would call it a success. The next race of the series will be on May 7th in Hiwassee Georgia. Hopefully, each race will have at least if not more competitors than the first race.
