SORCS Round 6
Broad River ATV
Round six of the SORCS series is over and it was a good one! The latest race was held at the Broad River ATV Park. First, let me say the folk at Broad River were great, they were very nice and it was a very pleasant experience. We stayed in a cabin on the park and it was very clean and since we could walk to the track, it was very convienent.
Scott got off to a mid-pack start heading into the woods. As usual, he made up good time in the woods, until he got too close to a tree. He had to get back on the track and start passing people all over again. On the first lap he had worked his way up to fifth. On the second lap, he was running third. The entire field was turning fast laps and the competition was stiff. Somewhere on the third lap, he was running second. On the last lap, Scott and Zach Lovell battled for the lead. At the finish line, it was Scott finishing in second place just a few seconds behind Zach. They battled right down to the finish line. It was a good finish to a fast race littered with crashes and equipment failure. After the race, upon checking out Scotts bike, we discovered a severely bent tie-rod. The front end was plowing bad, Scott said he knew something was wrong after the first lap crash, but he knew he couldn't stop. He fought the quad the entire race. I counted 5 or 6 quads pulling in during the race with bent or broken tie rods and a-arms and a few other assorted broken parts. Scott held on to the lead and other than a bent tie rod and a bruised ankle, came out OK. The suspension adjustments we worked on before the race payed off with the quad handling a lot better than it did at round 5.
Cam got off to a mid-pack start just ahead of Scott. He is getting a little more used to the TRX 450! When he came around for the first lap, he had worked his way up to sixth. During the race, Cam encountered some close racing with several competitors. On the first lap, five or six riders came out of the woods heading for the scoring tent. The competition for forth throug
h sixth was fierce and Cam finally made his pass for fourth stick on the last lap. He made some good time in the woods. He said that although the track was fun and he enjoyed the race, it was a brutal track and made full use of the DeRisi valved suspension. Cam held on to his third place position in his class. Cam rode conservatively on the motocross section while making up time in the woods section. After the race a check showed no problems with the New Honda. Before the race, Mike Newsome installed a new graphics package on Cam's quad. He is going with a black and blue theme with Adapt Racing DeRisi graphics. I hope that is the only thing that we see black and blue at the races!
Scott "Boss Man" Insinna finished 3rd in his class and picked up a new sponsor! He was sporting some new Mayfield Ice Cream Graphics.
We had the GNCC pro riders show up again. The pro line had Richie Brown, Mike Houston, Santo DeRisi and several other very fast competitors. Richie got off the line first. Man, he has lightning reflexes! By the time they headed in the woods Mike Houston had passed Richie. Santo had some trouble lighting up his bike and came off the line last. I knew this was setting up to be a real show! When they came around for the first lap, it was Mike Houston in 1st, Richie Brown in 2nd and Santo DeRisi was in third! They were flying, setting some blistering lap times. Mike soon checked out, that left Richie and Santo to battle it out for 2nd. Richie held on for three laps, but on the last lap, Santo passed Richie for 2nd. On the last lap, it was Mike, Santo and Richie. It is really fun having these guys show up for the races.
Blake Strickland was back at the races with a brand new 2006 TRX 450 ER! Blake was excited and ready to try out the new ride. This young man is smooth. He took a practically stock bike to a second place finish in his class. He was getting some pretty good air too. I guess that says something about the Hondas. Blake took a stock bike to second in his first race and Cam took his to fourth in his first race. I've got a feeling you could put these three guys on an 80cc quad and they would ride the wheels off of it. It was good to have Blake and his family back at the races. Blake had a friend to come and race as well but the track jumped up and bit hit him resulting in another bent tie-rod. It really affected his steering, but he came out in one piece and that is always good.
We had several crashes during the race, the EMTs were very busy. One rider had a bad crash on the table top jump at the end of the downhill straight on the motocross section. The officials had to re-route the riders and it took a while to get the rider off the track, but the officials did a really good job all day long. The folks at Broad River did an excellent job during the race weekend.
Phil Bearden wasn't able to make the race, he re-injured an old race injury. We really missed Phil and hope he will be back in action soon.
We also had Bill Bryant back at the track helping out. Thanks Bill! He said that new KTM is getting a lot closer to his garage. I hope so. We also had Chris Jarrard and Kaleb Medders at the track this weekend. Everyone had a good time and a good trip. We want to thank all of our sponsors and the event sponsors as well. Northestern Georgia Motorsports hosted a spagetti supper the the competitors and it was great! Thanks to Keith and Kathy from NGM for the great hospitality.
