SORCS Round 5 2007
Big Win for Scott Rogers
In what was, without a doubt, the best conditions in the 2007 SORCS series Scott Rogers pull
out another win. Round 5 of the series, held at Beaver Dam Creek in Sparta GA, hosted a near perfect track with plenty of moist, loamy dirt and hardly no dust! Cam Rogers came back from a last place start to finish a solid 4th. Beaver Dam Creek was a great host for round 5 and we certainly hope they will continue to be a part of the SORCS series.
On the Quad Pro start, Zack Lovell got the holeshot and started pulling away. Steve Purser came off the line 2nd with Scott taking 3rd. Into the first turn, Scott squeezed inside to grab 2nd place. The Pro racing was tight and fast. Coming off of one of the few open fields, all three pro riders overshot the turn, and had to turn around to pickup the course. Scott grabbed the lead going into the next woods section and started setting a fast pace. The pro class stuck close on the first lap, enjoying the tight technical
course. On lap two, Zack crashed into a tree pretty hard and fell back to third. Steve Purser took over second place until lap three. Zack was able to hold on to retake 2nd place. Scott was busy stretching his lead to a comfortable cushion. The top three Pro riders rode a smart race to increase their collective positions.
In the Quad A class, Max Segraves took another win. This is Max's fifth win in as many races. Not only did he win his class, he made up a minute, passed everyone in the Pro class except Scott and almost
crashed in the no-pass zone of the scoring tent, ramming Scott several times. This action continued after the checkered flag fell, with Max hitting Scott a few more times. His last lap time was fast enough to give him the overall win. The only person in the A class that stayed with Max was Chuck Norris but that didn't last for long. Max checked out at some portion of the track and no one in the A class was even remotely close to him at the finish. Max is generating a lot of talk in the pits this year. In round 4 he even beat GNCC National #3 Jennifer Albright getting sixth overall. Currently this year, the only competition in the A class is for second place on back. Normally, I would say Max had a good day, but he is having an unbelievable season! Winning his class is one thing, but beating the Pro Class, that's incredible. These Pro riders are no slackers, many have won GNCC events many times competing with the best in the nation, on some exotic machines! It makes you wonder is he is headed for a perfect season. My guess is, if nothing changes, yes he will have a perfect season. Whatever he is doing is certainly working to his advantage. Chuck Norris rode a good race to finish second with Austin Allen capturing
third. Cam finished fourth. Cam's fourth place finish places him in second place in the series points. Cam commented that this was the best course we have had this year. Our friend Mike Newsom had engine problems that put him out of the race. Mike also gave us an update on Mike Jr. He is healing fine and plans to rejoin the Series, possibly at round six. We are glad to hear that Mike's shoulder is healing and that he is doing fine.
Corey Jennings took the holeshot in the Quad Beginner class! Way to go Corey. Brenda said the only bad thing about it was, you got such a good start, no one was close enough to get a picture of you in action. It looks like you were all by yourself ;-)
On a personal note, I certainly hope Eddie addresses the action that took place at this race. The rider are warned before every race about entering the scoring section slowly and safely. I understand the heat of competition, but not in an area where several course workers are located. The nice ladies that do the scoring could have been seriously injured. They also have lots of expensive equipment in the scoring tent that would be expensive to replace. A little bumping and banging on the course is understandable, within reason, however reckless actions like we witnessed at round 4 could have had serious repercussions. Most of all my son as well as Max could have been seriously injured or worse. I understand that both of my son's are taking a great risk every time they go out to compete. I think about it all the time. We have lots of friends that race and we don't want to see anything bad happen to anyone. We don't need any help raising the risk factor at these events. I would like to offer Max the same advise I would offer my son's and advice I have offered several competitors/friends over the years:
Max, you are winning! You have won every race in your class this year. When you competing in any event, don't forget the human factor. Don't let your enthusiasm and desire to win take precedence over rational thinking. One mistake in the heat of the moment could cost you a championship, or God forbid, worse. Safety, good sportsmanship, and a healthy respect for your fellow competitors will go much further than winning every race at any cost. You are young, you have lots of time to win races. Don't do something in the heat of competition that you will regret. What if you had lost control at the race last week and some innocent person had gotten hurt? You are risking your health as well as others for a trophy. It isn't worth it. Please take this advice with the concern that I offer it. Race hard, race smart, race fair, and take what comes with respect.
In other racing action, our good friend Scott Insinna joined us for round 5 and finished third. It was good to see Scott again. Michael Tatum finished third in his class. Michael had to have the cutiest pit crew at the race. His daughters joined us for the race and they were precious! Jacob Coffey finished 3rd in the Quad Beginner class, and Mark Coffey got 2nd in the Quad Utility class. Kristen Deloach took second place in the Women's class. David Aman finished 2nd in the Quad Senior class in spite of a nasty crash. Lucas Walker took home the fifth place trophy in the Quad C class. Brian Schrantz took 5th in the Quad Vet class.
In the bike class, Bill Bryant took the holeshot in the Master C class and finished 5th. Bill's finish places him second in series points. Phil Griffin finished 3rd in Master A class. Sean Callahan finished 2nd in Senior C class. Josh Lee finished 4th in Junior class. Steve Deloach finished 5th in Senior B class.
It is amazing what rain can do for a race. We are very thankful for the rain, it really made the races safer. There is enough danger in racing without the additional dust. At the speeds that these competitors are running, you have to race smart and be careful. There is no place for reckless actions, the odds are high enough in this sport for injuries, and our wish is that everyone has a good race and returns home safe, happy and ready to race again.
